About ProFauna International
Contents
ProFauna International is a department of ProFauna Indonesia ( www.profauna.or.id), an Indonesian wildlife protection organization established in 1994. ProFauna International has been set up to coordinate the international campaigns, fund raising activities and other international offices, such as our UK representative office ( www.profauna-uk.org ).
Volunteering program:
ProFauna International organises the volunteering program in Indonesia, which is run at both Petungsewu Wildlife Education Centre (P-WEC) and at Petungsewu Wildlife Rescue Centre (PPS), the temporary shelter for protected species before they are being released into their natural habitats.
At P-WEC, volunteers work to help in running the wildlife education centre, an alternative education centre where community and the young generation are learning about wildlife conservation, discouraging poaching. The approach used to educate the youngsters is through outdoor adventure, fun recreation, play and learn, nature appreciation, wildlife and bird spotting. Volunteers would have the opportunity to interact with local Indonesian communities, from the youngsters to adults who come to visit P-WEC, as well as the nearby local villagers who live around P-WEC camp.
At PPS, volunteers would be able to work and care for wild animals such as gibbons, Javan ebony langurs, cockatoos, muncak deers, eagles, etc. Volunteers learn about the life of these animals and on a special occasion, might able to participate in the wildlife release program, if such program takes place. It is a rare and fulfilling experience to witness the release of wild animals poached from their natural habitats, after years of incarceration. This would be a rare experience to witness the wild animals which had been poached, caged inhumanely for years, suddenly enjoy freedom and be back in the wild.
